Kid Quotes: In Case You Need A Smile

June 20, 2018Annie

When I think about the purpose of this blog, I think about a couple of things: 1.) I want to make people pause and consider what’s most important in life. 2.) I want to help people laugh.

Thankfully, my four daughters give me plenty of stories to help me with both of those things!  Over the years, I’ve tried to write down the crazy things they say so we can enjoy them over and over again. But, why keep all this to myself? You guys are welcome to peek in and enjoy it too. Stay tuned for the next few weeks of my favorite Garman girl kid quotes.

  • 2008  (Darcy: Age 2)

While waiting for our flight at the airport in Copenhagen, Denmark, Darcy got a small boo-boo on her finger. To soothe her loud cries, I kissed it and told her not to worry because God would HEAL it.

She stopped crying, looked up at me and said solemnly, “But… GOD IS DEAD.”

I froze, alarmed and stunned that my two year old was QUOTING NIETZSHE.

How did this happen?

“Well, honey, JESUS died for our sins…if that’s what you mean…” I tried to clarify.

“Yeah…but Jesus IS GOD,” she responded, not cracking even a hint of a smile.

Okay, how do you begin to explain trinitarian theology to a two year old?

“Okay…you’re right….But…he didn’t stay dead. He conquered death and rose again. And, we also need to make a distinction between God in the person of Jesus Christ, God the Father, and God the Holy Spirit. God in Three Persons. Different functions, but…”

She was already off, climbing down the row of waiting room seats.

  • 2009 (Haley:Age 3): Tonight at dinner, Colby started randomly singing “Praise God to whom all blessings flow.” After the line, “Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,” Haley Jane, with a furrowed brow asked, “Why are you singing about a Ghost?” Colby tried to explain the doctrine of the Trinity to her and Haley’s response was, “Let’s just call Him the Holy Spirit, okay?”
